Barrerra's two companions, a year-old Saginaw High student and an year-old, are shot in the knee and foot, respectively. The Crips are a gang based in the coastal regions of southern California.

Once a single alliance between two autonomous gangs, they are now a loosely connected network of individual "sets", often engaged in open warfare with one another. Its members traditionally wear blue clothing, a practice that has waned somewhat due to police crackdowns specifically targeting gang members. Historically, members have been primarily of African-American heritage. The Crips are one of the largest and most violent associations of street gangs in the United States.

The Crips have a long and bitter rivalry with the Bloods. Stanley Tookie Williams met Raymond Lee Washington inand the two decided to unite their local gang members from the west and east sides of South Central Los Angeles in order to battle neighboring street gangs.

Most of the members were 17 years old. Bythere were 45 Crips gangs, called sets, operating in Los Angeles.

They were heavily involved in the production of PCP, marijuana and amphetamines. Washington had been against Crip infighting and after his death several Crip sets started fighting against each other. The Crips leadership was dismantled prompting a deadly gang war between the Rollin' 60 Neighborhood Crips and Eight Tray Gangster Crips which began causing nearby Crip sets to choose sides and align themselves with either the Gangster Crips or Neighborhood Crips waging an all out war in South Central and other cities.

Bythe Crips were in turmoil, warring with the Bloods and against each other. The growth and power of the gang really took off in the early s when crack cocaine hit the streets. In the early s, Crips sets began distributing crack cocaine in Los Angeles.

The huge profits from distribution of crack cocaine induced many Crips to establish new markets in other cities and states. As a result, Crip membership grew steadily and by late s it was one of the largest street gangs in the country. Some sources suggest that the original name for the alliance, "Cribs", was a name narrowed down from a list of many options, and chosen unanimously from three final choices, which included the Black Overlords, and the Assassins.

Cribs was chosen to reflect the young age of the majority of the gang members. The name "Cribs" evolved into the name "Crips" when gang members began carrying around canes to display their " pimp " status. People in the neighborhood then began calling them cripples, or "Crips" for short.

Williams, in his memoir, further refuted claims that the group was a spin-off of the Black Panther Party or formed for a community agenda, the name "depicted a fighting alliance against street gangs—nothing more, nothing less. Williams recalled that a blue bandana was first worn by Crips founding member Buddha, as a part of his color-coordinated clothing of blue Levi's, a blue shirt, and dark blue suspenders.

A blue bandana was worn in tribute to Buddha after he was shot and killed on February 23,which eventually became the color of blue associated with Crips.

The Crips have over sets with 30, to 35, members and associate members, including more than 13, members in Los Angeles. Members typically consist of young African-American men, with some members being white, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander.

In the LAPD estimated 15, Crips in sets; other source estimates were 30, to 35, in sets in California. Crips have served in the United States armed forces and on bases in the United States and abroad.

The Crips became popular throughout southern Los Angeles as more youth gangs joined; at one point they outnumbered non-Crip gangs by 3 to 1, sparking disputes with non-Crip gangs, including the L.

By the gang's notoriety had spread across Los Angeles. After two years of peace, a feud began between the Piru Street Boys and the other Crip sets. It would later turn violent as gang warfare ensued between former allies.Eastsidesometimes known as the State Streets, is a large neighborhood in Flint, Michigan.

It is not to be confused with East Flint in which it resides. Longway to the south. While subdivisions such as Civic Park and The East Village were originally designed as "bedroom neighborhoods" at some distance from the factories, the Eastside was built as a lower-income community from the beginning. This is demonstrated by the housing stock which consists almost strictly of wood-frame bungalows. Additionally, the neighborhood has been isolated from the rest of the city by the Flint River and, later, I and Delphi East.

Even in Flint's halcyon decades of the s and s, the Eastside was not considered a prosperous neighborhood. Problems magnified with the deindustrialization of General Motors beginning in the early s. The Eastside did not suffer from the rapid white-flight experienced across the river. At the same time, a large portion of the original population was displaced by southern migrants, and the neighborhood has gradually diversified. While the Eastside is unquestionably Flint's most racially and ethnically diverse neighborhood, [2] it has been continually plagued by gang-related violence and racial tension.

Today, the Eastside is one of Flint's most troubled neighborhoods in terms of violent crime. Due in large part to these problems, and the affordability of housing stock, the Eastside is one of the few neighborhoods in Flint where the majority of residents are not landowners. Mass property acquisitions have led to the concentration of residences in the hands of a few landlords. This, combined with infrastructural degradation and the decline of Flint as a whole, have reduced property values to new lows.

There are some assets in the Eastside working against these prevailing trends. In particular, Kearsley Park has been recently redesigned and renovated and has become a stabilizing influence on the neighborhood. The diversity of the Eastside, essentially unprecedented in Flint, has had its most visible impact on Davison Road, as seen by such businesses as Luigi's Restaurant and the Flint Judo Club.

Along these roads certain well established businesses, with long histories of community involvement, have contributed to the general stability of the area. However, on Davison Road, two such businesses have closed their doors within the last few years. Brown Funeral Home closed in and Angelos Coney Island - a restaurant famous in Flint, and, in business at that location since - closed permanently in December In an interview on Michigan Public Radio the owner of Angelos Coney Island stated that the restaurant had seen declining patronage over the last few years and suggested that he believed this was a consequence of Flint's dwindling population, the city's economic malaise, concerns over water quality, and people simply being afraid to come to the Eastside.

While Angelos Coney Island was a legendary eatery in the Flint area, its property had been the site of numerous assaults and murders over the last twenty years.

An all female gang on the east side?!? Numerous biker gangs. Blue monagramed track suits that read: Smurfs Inc. A gang that wore novelty plastic batting helmets I know this reads like a sequel to "The Warriors" but I swear it was Flint in the 80s. I have never laughed so hard in my life at this, playland was a batting turf to the neighborhood called little Missouri, and the all girl gang on the east side was the Chola's.

I remember a couple occasions where the Top Dawgs more or less rioted up and down Chevrolet Ave. It was the early s. Same thing happened on the last day of one of Longfellow Middle School's school years. Fortunately, they never really destroyed anything in the neighborhood or harmed any innocent people that I was ever aware of during those occassions.

Cool, a field trip - was it Mott Farm or the planetarium? Maybe it was Sloan Museum or some place like that. Growing up on Bagley Street, just a stone's throw from Ballenger Park, there was a wanna-be gang in the early 80's that called themselves "The Hoods".
